With Four Glorious Music Video Releases Within Days Of Each Other, It’s Been A Great Month For Malta’s Alternative Scene

Malta’s alternative music scene might not be big, but it sure gets its bouts of activity. And ahead of summer, some local movers and shakers are starting to tease and show off some of their latest work.

This month, it was the turn for four of the currently biggest and most exciting names in their new subgenres to showcase what they had been working on.

First up was the debut single (and video) of Djun, a delicate and delectable track by the name of Il-Bir

Reminiscent of ethereal, Maltese-language alternative favourites Brodu, Djun have a very promising future ahead of them on the islands. They’ll be showcasing all their material in an album launch next month, but before that, it was time for them to launch their debut single, and what a single it proved to been.

Il-Bir has quickly become one of the local alternative music scene’s favourite tracks of 2019, and between the catchy chorus, the heavenly vocals, and the simple yet striking visuals by Videocafe, it’s very easy to see why.

Then, it was the turn of Barri, the latest banger from 215 Collective’s Eddie Fresco

After fans were gutted to hear that the trio’s Yannick would be leaving 215 Collective due to personal reasons, it was time for an early treat in the form of a premature release of Eddie Fresco’s latest single.

Barri, as the name implies, is a savage banger indicative of what Fresco’s latest project, Incognito, is set to sound like. Thanks to a surprise collaboration with international huge names Trash who helped distribute the video, Barri got over 10,000 views in the first hour it was uploaded, going on to amass 40,000 views in four days.

Strobes, guns, knives, bass… the Red Pill Blue Pill Productions video really has it all, and is an insane wake-up call ahead of the weekend. Look out for Barri during heavy hip hop parties like the ones organised by Black Plague; this one’s here to stay.

Barely an hour later, local post-rock band Eyes to Argus unveiled their latest music video, Microcosm, at a special event in Ta’ Xbiex

Also a sign of things to come, Microcosm is the four-piece’s first release outside of their debut album Veer, so it was only fitting that a whole do would be organised around its first showing.

Members of the Maltese alternative music scene flocked to Ta’ Xbiex’s Storeroom on the night of Wednesday 15th May, where they were treated with popcorn and two viewings of the track’s music video on a big screen. Then, one week later, the music video in all its seven-minute glory finally made it to YouTube.

An interim release before the band heads to the second to record their second album, Microcosm is equal parts familiar and new territory for both Eyes to Argus and their fans.

The professional-level music video (incidentally the band’s first) was directed by Francesca Mercieca, with cinematography by Jack Hayter, also featuring Brandon Shaw as Pastor Benito.

Four days later, in the same spot, another music video launch went down… this time from the mind of Italian aerospace engineer Leonardo Barilaro

Yep, you read that right.

Having recently moved to Malta, the Italian pianist is known to perform his beautiful compositions against dramatic scenery from around the island. Last weekend, he revealed a sprawling four-minute visual to his latest project, Quiet Sun.

“They key of the piece is in the opening sentence of the video: ‘Stepping outside into the chill of the future’,” Barilaro explained of the composition.

Exploring the relationship between the actual change in a physical stimulus and the perceived change, the video is one long symbolic ride into the duality of nature, music and dance, and some impressive visuals courtesy of Marley Lagana and BLEND Production.
