Watch: ‘Something Out Of A Horror Movie’ – The She Word Gets Real About Malta’s Dating Scene
Being young, successful and single comes with its fair share of challenges—especially when it comes to dating in Malta.
In the latest episode of The She Word: Young Women’s Edition, titled “Young Women, Single and Successful,” host Sasha Vella sits down with content creator Sarah Grech, two-time Olympic swimmer and freediver Nikki Muscat and Ukrainian photographer Olha Ruccya to unpack the realities of modern dating as independent women.
And let’s just say, the tea was spilled.

Right off the bat, the panel didn’t hold back, with Sasha describing today’s dating scene as something “out of a horror movie”, a sentiment that was met with instant agreement from the other women.
Olha pointed out the limited dating pool in Malta, saying “I’m sorry, guys, but in Malta, the market is so limited.” She added that back home, dating someone your friend has already gone for coffee with would be unheard of—but in Malta? “Now we take anything!”
Meanwhile, Nikki admitted that she struggles to connect with people quickly, revealing that she hasn’t been on a random date since 2016.
The young women went on to discuss the challenge of finding a partner who actually adds value to their lives, with Nikki summing it up perfectly: “Why would I date someone who cannot provide more than what I can provide for myself already?”
And if that bar seems high, she joked that “probably that person is going to be 60… and I’m not going to date someone who is 60.”
Beyond the struggles of dating in Malta, the conversation took a powerful turn—challenging outdated mindsets about relationships and highlighting the empowerment in choosing singlehood.
The women made it clear: being alone doesn’t mean being lonely, and they refuse to settle for anything less than what they truly deserve.
The She Word tackles real conversations that matter every Thursday, so stay tuned for more refreshingly honest discussions on the issues young women face today.
