2 Weeks Of Exciting Football: Malta To Host U19 EURO In July

All eyes will be on the emerging stars of European football when Malta hosts the UEFA European Under-19 Championship between 3rd and 16th July, 2023.

Two weeks of exciting football await as eight nations will be competing to win the prestigious European U-19 trophy, with the championship game taking place on Sunday, July 16, at the National Stadium.

The line-up for this tournament is a mix of traditional heavyweights, the likes of former champions Italy, Spain, and Portugal, and aspiring nations like Poland, Greece, Norway and Iceland who will be looking to win the U-19 EURO for the first time in their history. There is of course Malta who will be giving their all to make the country proud.

The tournament draw, held on 19th April at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta, placed Malta in Group A along with Italy, Poland and Portugal while Group B comprises Iceland, Greece, Norway and Spain.

“The countdown is on and we are looking forward to the U-19 EURO which will showcase the best upcoming talent in European football, this is truly a tournament where legends are born,” Bjorn Vassallo, the President of the Malta FA, said.

“I am confident that the tournament will live up to expectations in terms of the quality of the football on display, the level of organisation and the emotions as all the teams will be striving to be crowned U-19 European champions,” Vassallo adds.

Who are the tournament ambassadors?

The UEFA Under-19 Tournament proudly features two esteemed ambassadors, Michael Mifsud and Joseph Mbong, who have left an indelible mark on the world of football. Michael Mifsud, hailing from Malta, is a legendary figure in his country’s football history. Known for his lightning-quick pace and clinical finishing, Mifsud has carved out a successful career, being the National Team’s most-capped player and top scorer and playing for various clubs whilst representing the Maltese national team with distinction. 

Joseph Mbong, on the other hand, brings his captivating story of determination and resilience to the role. Born in Nigeria, Mbong overcame numerous obstacles to forge a career in professional football. His journey includes taking part in the UEFA Under 17 Tournament which Malta hosted in 2014.  Together, Mifsud and Mbong epitomize the tournament’s values of excellence, sportsmanship, and perseverance, and their involvement will undoubtedly elevate the excitement and significance of the UEFA Under-19 Tournament.
