After Spending €10.30 On Two Espressos And Pastries In Malta, Man Warns ‘We Are Being Robbed’

Stopping for a coffee and a small bite to eat in Malta might come with its own hidden tax after one man pointed out that two pastries and two espresso shots cost more than double in Valletta than it would in nearby Syracuse, Sicily.

Uploading photos of the receipts, the man pointed out that the two pastries and espresso shots cost him €10.30 from an establishment along Valletta’s Republic Street, with the same exact order costing €4.40 in Syracuse.

“Everything costs double in Malta – this is even more proof of why you hear people complaining about the rise in prices,” the man said.

“We are being robbed every minute,” he said.

“When will this stealing stop?” he questioned.

There are many reasons why the products could cost more from a place on Republic Street, like higher rent and wages – but many still baulked at the €10.30 bill.

Over the last few months, many people around Malta have started to feel the pinch of inflation. Still, Malta’s inflation rate remains the lowest in Europe despite the increase.

Prices in Malta are on the rise with the country feeling the effects of the war in Ukraine and a post-COVID-19 economy.

However, some people, including MP Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, have questioned whether some businesses have taken advantage and increased their prices by an exorbitant rate.
