From Mandatory Dash Cams To Highway Police: Malta Reacts To Latest Construction Truck Video
After shocking footage circulating on social media showed the dangerous acts of certain construction drivers, the people of Malta have reacted.
From mandatory dash cams to a call for a higher presence of highway police, it seems that many citizens have indeed encountered such dangerous driving – on the daily.
Lovin Malta spoke to the woman who released the dashcam footage depicting a construction truck dangerously overtaking her vehicle – an accident that could have had a fatal ending.
She also appealed for more safety, along with a dire need for a change in attitude when it comes to Malta’s roads – and for the authorities to step in when needed.
But what did the people of Malta have to say about it?
Some readers questioned whether the driver was arrested following the incident – and whether his license to drive was revoked along with his job.
“Has the driver been arrested, his licence taken and dismissed from his job as a truck driver, or is he still free to drive a truck cowboy-style till he kills somebody?” one said.
“I hope he loses both his job and his license – but knowing this country, he’ll get away with it,” another said.
Many more also called for the involvement of police, even stating that more police presence is needed, especially traffic police.
“If you got his license plate, report it and provide footage as evidence. Another reckless driver! I am tired of seeing people driving badly. We have overpopulated roads and a good number drive like this. Something needs to be done,” one said.
“Need more traffic police on the road issuing fines for reckless drivers. Maybe we control accidents and fatalities,” they said.
“Police please take action against this truck driver and give a lesson to others, who feel that they are ‘kings of the road’. This could have ended in another tragedy on our roads, of which we are having a lot!”
Some people also called for harsher measures – such as making sure that all heavy vehicles are equipped with mandatory dash cams, in order to always have evidence of their driving manner.
Others also opened up about their own experiences on Malta’s roads – detailing accounts of heavy vehicles driving in a dangerous manner that in turn gravely endangers others.
“The speed at which these truck drivers drive is unbelievable. Just this afternoon I had a near-miss with a huge truck driving at an excessive speed on a narrow road in Għarghur,” one reader said.
“I recorded a double-decker pulling out of a side road to a roundabout almost taking my left side if I hadn’t stopped! I posted it on Facebook and was blackmailed by the company that they will take necessary actions against me unless I take it down. The boss told me they fired the driver. One week later I see the same driver driving the same double-decker. The same company had the accident when two tourists died! What happened after that accident? Nothing,” another one shared.
“About a month or so there was a similar incident where a 40ft trailer overtook a car and crossed the white line nearly hitting an oncoming car in Ħal Far road,” one said.
“I had a similar experience eight years ago at the ferry terminal when a construction truck rammed straight into me when clearly he had seen me with the indicator in my lane. Needless to say, I got the blame,” another shared.
