Foreign Minister Ian Borg has defended an Mġarr restaurant owner’s right to protest and express himself after facing boycott calls from some political quarters.
The beloved family restaurant in Mġarr, Il-Barri, which specialises in traditional Maltese food, was facing boycott calls and online abuse initiated by a construction company owner, Matthew Bongailas, after the restaurant owner was spotted at a Valletta protest.
Bongailas is a well-known Labour supporter, even having worked in Prime Minister Robert Abela’s team during his PL leadership run.
Asked by Lovin Malta whether he supports Bongailas’ current messaging, Borg simply said that the restaurant owner has every right to make his voice heard.
“Stephen tal-Barri, who I know well and did my best to assist him in the past too, has every right to protest or express himself,” Borg told Lovin Malta, before cheekily adding alongside a rabbit emoji:
“I look forward to have a good fenek (rabbit) sooner than later.”
This comes after Bongailas attempted to initiate a boycott call after the Mġarr restaurant owner was spotted protesting in Valletta.
“Good to know that’s your thanks to the Prime Minister for keeping your business alive during the pandemic, you should be ashamed of yourself,” Bongailas wrote, directed towards the Mġarr restaurant owner.
Meanwhile, it has since been revealed that the owner of Bongailas Construction received 15 direct orders worth around €2 million from Infrastructure Malta within just a few months back in 2021.
What do you make of Borg’s thoughts on the controversy?
