Maltese Athletes Qualify For Mediterranean Games After Breaking National Record Twice In One Afternoon
Malta’s female relay team smashed a national record twice in one afternoon in Agropoli, Italy, qualifying for the Mediterranean Games in the act.
The new record was achieved in the 4x100m relay, after athletes Claire Azzopardi, Charlotte Wingfield, Carla Scicluna, and Janet Richard managed to lower the national threshold from 46.24 to 46.07. A record that was unmatched for seven years.
They didn’t stop there. They managed to lower the time once again – this time to 45.81 – in the same race, just a couple of hours later.
Through this result, the team secured a spot in the upcoming Mediterranean Games being held in Algeria this Summer.
A solid performance was also registered by the male counterparts: Daniel Saliba, Steve Camilleri, Beppe Grillo, and Luke Bezzina, with a time of 42.12.
The outcome proved a rather positive afternoon for the Maltese team, especially when considering that many fielded athletes competed for the first time, this outdoor season.
