Man Who Killed Woman Driving At 140km/hr In Gżira Gets Suspended Sentence

A man who ran over and killed a woman while driving one of the fastest cars in the world at 140km/hr was handed a suspended sentence.
The incident occurred in Gżira while pharmacist Stephanie Rapa was crossing the road on the seafront.
Chircop was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for four years, for killing the 30-year-old on 19th October 2017.
He pleaded guilty following a change of heart.
He was also fined €11,646, ordered for his car to be confiscated, banned from driving for two years, and ordered to pay €3,800 by Magistrate Astrid May Grima.
This is in addition to the €324,000 he was ordered to pay to Rapa’s family earlier this year after the civil court ruled that his dangerous driving is what caused Rapa’s death.
Chircop was driving a GTR Nissan, one of the nine fastest cars in the world when he hit the woman with excessive speed, sending her in the air between two palm trees before she hit her head on the ground – CCTV footage showed.
In an appeal court, presided over by Chief Justice Mark Chetcuti and Mr Justices Giannino Caruana Demajo and Anthony Ellul, the judges noted that before the incident occurred, Chircop used a special feature in the car to increase the speed, making the victim’s death inevitable.
The court further noted that the CCTV footage was proof of the frantic speed that the defendant was driving at, as well as how violent the impact was.
Police Inspector Jonathan Ransley prosecuted while Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri were the defendant’s lawyers.
