An orange weather warning has just been issued by the Meteorological Office, as Storm Helios is forecast to bring torrential rain and gale-force wind in the next hours.

Informing citizens all over Malta, the orange weather warning tells everyone to be prepared as weather conditions are reaching severe levels.

“The East to East Northeast wind will be very strong over the Maltese Islands, reaching gale force over the exposed areas. Moderate to heavy precipitation is expected to affect the Maltese Islands,” the Met Office said online.

Malta’s Civil Protection Department is also on high alert in case of any serious damage brought on by the wind.

The centre of the low-pressure system causing the storm is around the Maltese islands between today and tomorrow, bringing more severe weather conditions.

From the early hours of today until tonight, very strong – force seven to nine – easterly winds are expected to sweep across the Maltese Islands, with gusts reaching up to 45 knots.

Thursday’s strong winds are already whipping up very strong seas, with waves expected to reach up to five metres and even more. The rain may also be accompanied by thunder.

The public is, therefore, being advised to avoid coastal areas due to the possibility of flooding.

Some damage as a result of the storm has already been documented around the islands, with a wall having collapsed onto a parked car.
