It’s All Paperwork: Valletta Exhibition Depicts Extreme Ability To Make Stone Seem Like Paper

An upcoming exhibition by sculptor Antoine Farrugia is all about depicting his extreme ability to transform stone into what can be almost perceived as sheets of paper.

The solo exhibition, It’s All Paperwork, is launching on 29th November and running until 11th December, at the Parliament Building in Valletta.

The sculptures, all done using Maltese Globiġerina Limestone, illustrate the sculptor’s gentle touch and his ability to turn hard stone into something that looks like paper.

The body of works features a variety of representations of ‘paper’ variations in an almost playful way, from origami to scrolls of paper and other shapes which seem to defy gravity.

The first part of this series of works, comprised of four artworks displayed on the same stand, was executed around five years ago. These are all hanging sculptures with the works displayed on concrete bases, and the sculptures were not polished.

All the newer works executed this year are set on lava bases and have a wax and polish finish using a special technique devised by Farrugia – seen for the first time on artworks that formed part of his last solo exhibition Xulliela Bajda – which maintains the original beautiful colour of this stone.

The theme of ‘paper’ is a subject that Farrugia has been researching and experimenting with for some years, but never exhibited before, until now, when the perfect opportunity came along.

The exhibition is being held under the patronage of Anġlu Farrugia, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and is produced by the Valletta Cultural Agency with the participation of the House of Representatives.
