Virtual Journeys: Floriana Elderly Home Embraces VR And AR Enriching Residents’ Lives

Residents at the Floriana Residential Home are now enjoying new experiences through Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technology.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, visited the Floriana Residential Home where he observed up close how the residents are reacting to the technology, as part of a pilot project introduced by the Active Ageing and Community Care (AACC).

“Technology is not replacing human contact, but is being strengthened by it. This is another step towards offering care that looks at the person as a whole,” said Dr Agius Galea.

This initiative was a proposal that emerged during a seminar on Innovation and Creativity, and from there the AACC took care of providing workers with the necessary training to use the technology in a safe and appropriate manner for residents.

The parliamentary secretary said that this project is a clear example of how active ageing can continue to develop with modern tools that make a real difference in everyday life.

Residents who took part in the first sessions were able to experience virtual visits to places they have an emotional connection to, including the Żabbar Parish Church, the city of Venice, and the Vatican. The initial response was very positive, and the project now aims to expand to other homes across Malta.

This initiative helps to reduce social isolation, stimulate cognitive function, and also supports the rehabilitation process. All in a safe, pleasant environment adapted to the needs of the elderly.

Do you think we should introduce nationwide technology in elderly resident homes?
