€20,000 Raised Overnight To Help Caruana Galizia Libel Case
A crowdfunding campaign has already raised more than €20,000 to help blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia fight a libel case for which her assets have already been frozen.
The campaign on Indiegogo was started by Nationalist Party candidate David Thake and aims to cover the €47,460, which is the amount of money frozen by the courts on the request of Economy Minister Chris Cardona.
“In just over 15 hours, the fund has successfully raised over €20,000”
In just over 15 hours, the fund has successfully raised over €20,000, which would already cover almost two of the four libel suits filed against Caruana Galizia for her stories claiming that Cardona was at a German brothel two weeks ago.
Donations keep pouring in every couple of minutes. Whether or not they like Caruana Galizia’s brutal ways on her blog, many people have come out to say that they are shocked with the events that have lead up to yesterday evening’s revelations, and it seems like many people are willing to show their support towards something which is far greater than any one journalist.
“DCG has said that if she ends up winning the case, she will donate the entirety of the raised amount to Dar Merħba Bik”
In a phone call with Lovin Malta, David Thake said this campaign was intended to cover the legal expenses involved. Thake also pointed out that he has already received hundreds of euro in cash donations, which means the total amount that’s been raised is even more substantial.
Caruana Galizia told Lovin Malta that if she ended up winning the case and not needing to pay the €47,460, she would donate the entirety of the raised amount to Dar Merħba Bik, an NGO which offers shelter for female victims of domestic violence and their children.
