One year ago, Jessica Rae lost her beloved fiancée, the young Gozitan soldier Geordie Muscat.

They were even meant to marry this year, in 2022.

But instead of crumbling inside, Jessica has used her passion to fuel a new initiative that’s raised thousand of euro for charity – and it all started from a simple idea of Geordie’s to save money.

“Geordie always had a karus aħmar (red deposit box) in his room and every day, he would put money into it. When it was eventually filled, he would always use this money either to help others, or for a holiday, or for something sentimental to him,” Jessica told Lovin Malta.

“In order to keep his memory alive, which certainly remained and will remain in our hearts, we came up with the concept of “il-Karus l-Aħmar”.”

After his death, Jessica and her team headed to the Xagħra feast in Gozo with a little red deposit box, with the idea for his friends and family to “buy him a drink” if they were missing him.

“In a few days, we managed to raise more than €6,000, all of which went to Puttinu Cares.”

That’s when they knew they were on to something, and started attending a number of activities to promote this generous idea.

Today, anyone that wants to deposit some money into the little red piggy bank, or even buy Geordie a drink as originally intended, can do so by going to Rubbles Bar in Xagħra Square.

And the community that’s formed around the idea continues to grow stronger and stronger by the day.

And now they’ve teamed up with event organisers to set up a memorial concert dedicated to Geordie.

“The aim is to celebrate life and to #HelpGeordieHelpOthers by raising money for Puttinu Cares through il-Karus l-Aħmar. The concert will be a bit different as we are going to introduce worship music with modern day songs with the help of a small orchestra and a band, and it’ll happen on 12th August, on International Youth Day, at Xaghra Square.”

Sempre Vivo/Dejjem Ħaj will be held on 12th August in Victory Square, Xagħra Gozo. It is a free event sponsored by the Cultural Heritage Directorate and Ministry for Gozo in aid of Puttinu Cares through il-Karus l-Aħmar.
