80% Of Maltese In Favour Of Abortion When Woman’s Life Threatened, New Church Survey Finds
A whopping 80% of Maltese people are in favour of abortion when the mother’s health is at risk, a new church-commissioned survey has found.
The latest survey by Misco, commissioned by the Archdiocese of Malta, was carried out towards the end of November and featured 800 respondents.
A percentage of almost 80% voted in favour of “a medical intervention that results in the termination of pregnancy in circumstances where a woman’s life is in danger”.
On the other hand, 68% of respondents said that they are against abortion being used when the woman’s health is not at risk.
Meanwhile, one-fifth of respondents, 21% agree that abortion can be used as a means of limiting the size of a family, irrespective of whether a mother’s health or life is at risk.
With regard to the question of abortion in cases where a woman’s life is not at risk, it is notable that 58% of women and 78% of men said they were against it.
The survey’s results come just a day after Parliament historically voted in favour of a new abortion bill, which outlines the medical intervention being decriminalised in the case of women’s health being at risk.
These numbers, therefore, prove that the majority of the country is in favour of the new bill – which may come as a surprise for the mainly conservative island.
