‘Andrea’s Spinal Cord Is Severely Injured’: Fundraiser Launched For Maltese Man Recovering From Obstacle Course Accident
Loved ones of a beloved Maltese man who came within an inch of paralysis and even death following a freak accident during a recent obstacle course are appealing for donations and funds as he undertakes a long and painful road to recovery.
“Andrea’s spinal cord has been severely injured at the base of his neck. This type of injury results in complete paralysis, however, in Andreas case, he has slowly managed to start breathing alone and just completed his first 24 hours without the help of a ventilator,” the Facebook page Andrea Calleja Fundraising said today.

“He also gained movement of his right arm which has enabled him to hold a spoon and feed himself… I have been told that even as a very young child, he hated to be fed so this is a true blessing!”
His loved ones give regular updates to Andrea’s recovery journey – and explain why funds need to be raised.
“In order for Andrea to gain some independence and to be able to go home, he needs movement of both arms. This will take many months of rehabilitation followed by a long visit to a rehab centre overseas,” the page said.
“You can imagine the costs involved.. and so this is what we need to help with.”
“Andrea is determined to gain his independence again. He has the will of a Super Hero and with our help, we are confident he will get home.”

He was on the last leg of the race when he slipped as he was coming down a slide.
