‘We Will Not Be Intimidated’: Student’s Tower Mask Gets Confiscated On First Day Of Freshers’ Week

A towering mask featuring the faces of Maltese politicians and developers was confiscated by University of Malta security guards during the first day of Freshers’ Week, leading to cries of censorship on campus.

Moviment Graffitti, Malta’s most prominent pressure group, took to Facebook to explain what happened near their stand earlier today, after one of their members was stopped and told to remove their mask, before having it confiscated.

“During the first day of Freshers’ Week, members of the student section of Moviment Graffitti (Studenti MG) wore a prop of a tower with a mask of Ian Borg attached to the person wearing it,” the group said following the confiscation.

“While talking to students about their environmental concerns, two security guards took the mask and demanded us to stop as political messages are not accepted at University. When we argued that this was ironic as politicians were present at Freshers’ Week, we were told that this was none of our business,” they continued.

Students wore masks featuring the faces of people such as Ian Borg, the Transport Minister, and Sandro Chetcuti, the Malta Developer’s Association chief.

“Later, we politely asked them to give us back our mask, or else we would have to go public about this act of censorship. However, they refused.”

Moviment Graffitti have since issued an official letter of complaint to the Precincts’ office at the University of Malta, calling the confiscation an attempt to “silence” political discussion at University.

“This is completely unacceptable and an attempt to silence political discussion at University. We demand that the mask is given back and the students are allowed to use the masks throughout the rest of the week to show that political discussion is welcome at University,” they said.
