Education Commissioner Charles Caruana Carabez has confirmed he will investigate a parent’s warning of violent school gangs at his son’s secondary school.
“I woke up this morning with such high spirits but was disrupted by a sudden blow when my son told me he does not intend to attend school because he is being bullied by a group of foreign students after one of them picked on him at school and on his trip back home two days ago,” the parent wrote on his Facebook wall. “The same group picked on another student yesterday and rumours are that this other student was beaten black and blue and left unconscious. I am verifying this story and would like any feedback to know if this is true.”
The parent added that his colleague has relayed his own son’s warning that “foreign students” are forming gangs and that some are even carrying pointed objects around with them.
“Do we need to hear of murder or a disability being the end result before anything is done?” the parent asked. “When do the school authorities pluck up the courage to create a safe environment and teach our kids about morality and respect before focusing on academic topics in an militant way (at times)?”

“I hate to say this but I am in complete delusion about the way the system is working and that no support is given when calling at the school. My son should be focusing on his final exams but this objective is being disturbed. Now I will have to pay for extracurricular lessons and a home-schooling practice.”
“There is more to this but all I need is a safe community college and a way forward! Can anyone help?”
The parent disclosed the name of his son’s school and Lovin Malta has reached out to it’s administration for comment.

Another parent commented that a 14-year-old boy was beaten up by a gang of five or more students at the school and that her own nephew was beaten up by a gang of older boys at an unnamed government school.
“They kept punching him till he lost consciousness,” she said. “Today is the day I am going to lose it and I will put a stop to it myself since no one else is taken action. It’s been going on weeks and I will not tolerate any form of bulling.”
Education Commissioner Charles Caruana Carabez commented on the parent’s post to confirm he will investigate these reports and to urge other people who experienced similar occurrences to contact him privately.
