COVID-19 Wage Supplement Should Extend Until March Following Latest Surge, PN Urges
The government should extend its COVID-19 wage supplement for employees in the catering and tourism industry until the end of March in light of the recent spike in new cases, the Nationalist Party urged today.
The PN noted the recent surge was having a negative impact on the operations of many in the tourism and entertainment sector, calling on the government to intervene immediately to help struggling businesses.
In addition to an extension to the government’s wage supplement initiative, the party also wants to see VAT for bars and restaurants reduced to 7%.
It also wants government intervention to counter increases of the cost of heating fuel, which has increased by 8% since the start of November.
“The Malta Tourism Authority and the minister should also stop spending money allocated for the sector on the minister’s district and instead concentrate on a marketing plan for the country and serious investment in tourism,” the PN said.
Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo has been accused of dishing out MTA sponsorships and funds to entities, like band clubs, in the electoral districts he contests on.
If the government were serious in its intention to help the sector it would implement its recommendations without delay, the party added.
Last week Health Minister Chris Fearne announced new measures in view of the recent surge, including the cancellation of all standing events from this week and the need for patrons of gyms, restaurants, cinemas and other similar venues to present a vaccine certificate before being allowed to enter.
