Daphne Caruana Galizia’s Family Says Egrant Libel Suit Goes Against Their Fundamental Rights

Daphne Caruana Galizia’s family claim that the libel suit filed by ex-Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and his wife Michelle Muscat breaches their fundamental rights, because there is no way to defend themselves.
Peter Caruana Galizia and sons Matthew, Andrew and Paul, warned that they have no access to the late journalist’s sources, so they cannot defend themselves over the allegations made that Egrant, an offshore company, belonged to Michelle Muscat.
The family submitted proceedings to the constitutional courts to defend Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assertion that what she wrote about the Muscats was based on true and closely guarded information, that only she had access to.
In 2017, Caruana Galizia wrote that the Panama company Egrant belongs to Michelle Muscat, wife of then Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
Daphne Caruana Galizia had made a reply to the libel suit just three days before her murder, that the story “amounted to fair comment based on facts that were substantially true”.
After her murder, Muscat said they would drop the case if they accepted the conclusions of the Egrant inquiry. However, the family refused.
The Caruana Galizias now have to produce evidence that supports her plea that the Egrant allegations were true, without any access to her sources.
