Donuts And Oranges? Rosianne Cutajar Calls Out PN Treating ‘Hypocrisy’

Labour MP Rosianne Cutajar called out the Nationalist Party and Repubblika for “hypocrisy” after PN MP Eve Borg Bonello distributed free donuts to volunteers at a political rally in Qormi.

Cutajar reminded people that, back in 2021, Repubblika had reported her to the police for delivering small bags of oranges to residents of an elderly care home in her Qormi constituency.

Back then, Repubblika warned that the act constituted “treating”, the illegal act of giving out free food, drinks or other items with the intention of influencing their votes.

“Do you remember the furore that the PN and Repubblika kicked up when I delivered oranges to elderly people? They even reported me to the police,” she said.

“All other comments about hypocrisy are superfluous. Meanwhile, I look forward to another week of work.”

Borg Bonello retorted that she wasn’t distributing gifts to her constituents in return for votes but handed out donuts to PN volunteers as a gesture of appreciation. She also pointed out that a general election hasn’t been called, even though an election hadn’t been announced either when Cutajar had distributed oranges four years ago.

“If Rosianne Cutajar believes I did something unethical, I invite her to report me to the Standards Commissioner, but I think we should use this time to work for a better future.”

Cutajar then retorted that she wasn’t criticising Borg Bonello for distributing donuts but rather “her friends for resorting to extreme gestures”.
