‘Expect More Direct Action,’ Moviment Graffitti Warns Should Blue Lagoon Continue To Be ‘Hijacked’

Environmental activists issued a second letter to five ministers promising “more direct action” should the Blue Lagoon continue to be threatened by commercial interests.

In a letter addressed to Malta’s ministers of Tourism, Gozo, the Environment, Lands and Planning, Moviment Graffitti has once again shined a light on the worrying situation of Comino’s Blue Lagoon.

In its letter, Moviment Graffitti urged authorities to take the following measures to protect the area:

  1. That deckchairs and umbrellas are only set up at the request of a person physically present on the spot and at no time should they occupy more than 30% of the area at Blue Lagoon.
  2. Prohibiting large boats carrying hundreds of tourists to Comino
  3. Imposing a limit of two small kiosks without music
  4. Imposing a limit on the type and amount of waste generated, collected every day in the evening so that rats do not continue to multiply.

It was the second statement sent, with them not having received a response to the first letter sent on 6th June.

“Directions given by the management plan remained shelved for six whole years in order not to slight the commercial interests that have hijacked this natural reserve,” it wrote in a press release.

“We expressed our regret that since then, the situation has remained completely unacceptable.”

In its letter, MG warned that they remain ready to take matters into its own hands once again. Not only to make certain that Comino is enjoyed by all but also to ensure that its environment is protected.

“Moviment Graffitti has always stressed that the reason for the dire situation in the Blue Lagoon is the intensive commercial interests that have taken over the beach,” it said.

“Not only deckchairs and umbrellas but also large boats, such as catamarans, that pour in hundreds of tourists and the exaggerated number of kiosks that create unsustainable waste and noise.”

Should Moviment Graffitti be made to turn words into actions, it would be far from a first for the activists.

On 11th June, around 50 activists stormed Comino, removing deckchairs and dismantling umbrellas from the shoreline of Blue Lagoon.

Back in 2021, a parliamentary petition had been filed demanding the removal of sunbeds and umbrellas from Blue Lagoon in Comino. However, this clearly fell on deaf ears.
