The fate of the Gozitan island’s beautiful Ħondoq Bay in Qala is set to be decided this week after it has been facing plans to be transformed into a marina for the last 20 years.

On Thursday, the Environment Planning Review Tribunal will take its decision on the currently pending appeal.

In a unanimous decision, the Planning Board had rejected the plans for a marina and intensive tourist village but the developer had appealed this refusal.

“We hope that Ħondoq Bay will be preserved for those who love it and for future generations,” said Qala Mayor Paul Buttigieg.

“Gozo needs to safeguard its natural elements and not become intensely developed and spoilt.”

It’s been 20 years of legal battles and campaigning to protect Hondoq for the public, with Qala Mayor being at the forefront of this fight.

During the last election campaign, the Labour Party had also pledged that it will make sure that the bay is not developed in any way.

Here are seven reasons why we think that Ħondoq should remain as it is and be protected at all costs.

Do you think the ERPT should refuse the appeal?
