Gozo Fast Ferry’s ‘God Awful’ Schedule Faces Backlash For Slashing Trips For Winter
The new Gozo Fast Ferry schedule is facing backlash for cutting down its amount of trips for winter, with the last departure of weekday boats ending at 5pm from Mġarr and 4.30pm from Valletta.
“And the university students who finish lectures late at night? What are they going to do?” KSU president Alex Gaglione said in response to the schedule.
This new timetable starkly contrasts the summer schedule which had departures going on until 12.30am during the weekend. The weekly boats weren’t far off either with the last boat from Mġarr leaving at 10.30pm and the one from Valletta departing only an hour before.
Speaking to Lovin Malta, Gaglione explained how this new schedule completely disregards the interests of Gozitan students.
“Once again, Gozitan students seem to be demoted to second class citizens. The highly restricted timetable completely disregards students whose lectures go on until after 4.30pm (which are the vast majority), and part-time students whose lectures are only in the evening.”
“What is the point of pumping funds into companies who don’t even consider the needs of their clientele?” she asked.
“The commute Gozitan students have is already immensely inconvenient, such measures will only deter the lives of Gozitan students.”
Gozo Fast Ferry posted the new departure and arrival times to their social media and it seems as if most commenters shared a similar level of disapproval.
“Let’s face the facts, this initiative was never for Gozitans, it’s not even much use to Maltese, it’s not for commuters or students, but it’s primarily for tourists,” one commenter said before criticising that it doesn’t even give ferry users time to enjoy any evening activities.
“The service was initially aimed to accommodate Gozitans who commute daily. However, it seems that it actually accommodates the tourists during the summer months more since the summer schedule is full.”
“So those students that finish lectures after 4pm are to go to Ċirkewwa then? This is disrespectful to all Gozitans commuting to Malta daily,” the commenter continued.
“Just do the right thing and change this God Awful schedule.”
“Very inefficient service! Have you really considered the daily commuters who have to cross from Gozo to Malta everyday? Your slogan is “your time matters” but this schedule clearly proves that our time is not valuable as Gozitians are forced to take the long way home,” a commenter ironically pointed out.
Some commenters were in such disbelief, they thought it had to be a joke.
“Is this a joke? What about all the workers that finish work after 6pm? Should they swim back home?”
“I hope you will send the real time table and tell us this was just a joke.”
“This is a joke, it does not cater for the Gozitan workers at all. As always we are forgotten and we have to deal with the constant stress of how we are going to go to our work place.”
Association for Gozitan Employees in Malta has also chimed in, calling the revamped schedule “totally absurd” and assuring that the association will speak up on behalf of the Gozitan commuters and act accordingly.
