An oak tree planted in memory of murder victim Pelin Kaya has been brutally uprooted and left thrown to the side.

The sapling was planted within the Council of Europe Gardens in Gżira by Friends of Villa Frere, as a tribute to Pelin following her shocking murder which occurred just a few roads away.

“I guess we were too hopeful…a few weeks isn’t so bad by Malta’s standards maybe. Pelin’s memorial oak tree was uprooted and thrown aside,” Friends of Villa Frere said on social media.

“Hopefully it will recover once planted within the sanctuary of Villa Frere,” it said, announcing that the tree has now been taken under their care.

At the beginning of this month, Friends of Villa Frere planted the sapling in loving memory of Pelin, after they had an oak sapling to spare.

“The oak is the national tree of Turkey and like other memorial trees under our care, it will hopefully flourish in years to come,” it had said.

Pelin Kaya, a Turkish national, was run over by Jeremie Camilleri in Gżira on 18th January as she was walking home from her 30th birthday party. Camilleri was high on cocaine at the time and police had to tase him to bring him into custody.

Camilleri has since been charged with her murder and is pleading not guilty to the charges.
