Ian Borg Should Resign After Infamous ODZ Pool Declared Illegal, PN Says
The Nationalist Party has called upon Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg to resign after the court of appeal declared his infamous pool illegal.
After a recent sentence slammed the Planning Authority’s permission granted to Borg’s application, the PN is now stressing that he “should shoulder political responsibility and resign”.
“This when, while Borg was in charge of the Planning Authority and while, as the court, itself stated, he was aware that the permit was being contested before the courts, he still continued with the development of the pool,” the PN continued.
“The Nationalist Party recalls that this development was already surrounded by serious doubts after even the Ombudsman’s Office had said that the application was made ‘in a devious manner’.”
Furthermore, “the court had already disbelieved Minister Borg’s version of how he acquired the land abusively from a vulnerable person,” it continued.
“The Maltese courts have again given another certificate of bad governance to the government and the Planning Authority after it, once and twice, issued a permit for a development that goes completely and clearly against the 2006 Local Plans and the planning policies of the same authority for the area, meaning that swimming pools are not permitted.”
“While maintaining that Borg should resign, the Nationalist Party insists that the Planning Authority should be a serious and independent authority without allowing interference in its operation.”
The disputed plans saw Borg build a pool area near his Rabat home, which lies in the rural zone of Santa Katerina – which falls within the ODZ (outside the development zone).
