Jason Micallef: ‘Many Hardcore PL Voters Felt Joseph Muscat Was Left Alone’

Jason Micallef has delved into the stunning MEP election results and provided some interpretations for why the PL’s majority was slashed so significantly.

“All surveys were proven wrong,” he said. “I had personally known for a while that the gap would decline for a number of reasons but I certainly didn’t expect it to go down to 10,000 votes.”

Micallef said that the PL had a “confused strategy” with regards to the Vitals inquiry, that resulted in Joseph Muscat, Chris Fearne, Edward Scicluna and others facing criminal charges.

“The optics were that the PL didn’t know whether to support the innocence of Joseph Muscat, Chris Fearne and Edward Scicluna after they were charged in court. I am convinced that the majority of PL voters felt that the ex leader and Prime Minister, and two ex ministers, were left alone. This disappointed the PL hardcore.”

Micallef also postulated that the people have grown used to the “common good” created by PL governments since 2013 and that reminding them about it was “useless because the electorate’s priorities change over time”. He also warned that the PL grew distant from several of its longtime supporters over the past two years.

He also criticised government authorities and agencies for a “serious lack of coordination” on infrastructural projects, such as trenching works and  road closures, and said people expect much better.

Micallef then went on to criticise the social media strategy of certain Cabinet members, warning they “feel more like teenagers than members of Cabinet”.

Finally, he said the PL’s electoral campaign gave the impression that everything was fine, and that its massive Ta’ Qali concert to close off the campaign made it seem as though the party had started celebrating before people even voted.

“The near future will be a huge test for the PL and its leadership,” he said. “Serious reflection is required from within and without to analyse what led the PL to lose several thousands of voters in a single election. Time is on PL’s side, and there is enough time to arrange things.”

“The people showed it doesn’t want the PN in charge. The PN didn’t gain from this result; the result is due to thousands of people abstaining from voting for PL for the first time since 2013. Those who claim otherwise are only laughing at themselves.”
