Lara Dimitrijevic Breaks Down Key Moments From A Milestone Year For Women’s Rights In Malta
After what has been one of the biggest years for women’s rights in modern Maltese history, lawyer and leading feminist activist Lara Dimitrijevic has shared a 2022 retrospecive, breaking down the year’s biggest milestones – as well as what the year has taught her.
And though the year has seen breakthroughs for women’s rights, with femicide becoming law and the very recent abortion bill amendment, Malta still has a very long way to go.
”Just the last month has shown how we still live in a society that believes that the state should be the one to determine what rights women and girls have over their choices and how authorities are still patriarchal in structure,” Dimitrijevic writes.
She touched upon the horrific murders that rocked the nation throughout the year.
”Hearing the news about Paulina. Nothing at that point made sense, other than anger. As the year progressed , we lost another sister, Rita Ellul… the year ended with the loss of another dear sister, Bernice… should have never lost her life, if the system bloody works!!”
Even though Dimitrijevic has received plenty of backlash and threats for openly being in favour of abortion and supporting women in their journey towards bodily autonomy (a fundamental human right), she made it clear that these reactions would only fuel her on her mission even more.
”This year has also reaffirmed that we cannot stop fighting for gender equality,” she said.
The lawyer further highlights the importance of self-care and family and friendly support – the best way for her to see the beauty in ”the constant negativity” is by taking time to herself and spending time with her loved ones.
Dimitrijevic goes onto say that she holds no grudges towards those who keep on belittling and insulting her, and they only confirm that what she’s doing is significantly important and necessary.
