107,406 Foreigners Were Working In Malta In August 2023, An Increase Of More Than 10,000 In Eight Months

In August 2023, a total number of 107,406 foreign workers were employed in Malta- an increase of 10,436 international employees on our island within a span of just eight months, according to papers laid down in Parliament.

These figures were revealed in today’s Parliamentary session after PN’s Bernice Bonello posed a parliamentary question to the Minister for Finance and Employment Clyde Caruana asking for the total number of foreign workers who have been employed in Malta these past 13 years, as well as the respective industries they are working in.

Back in December 2022, the total number of foreign workers in Malta was at 96,970. This was an increase of more than 25% from the previous year’s figures, which recorded a number of 76,395 foreigners working in Malta.

According to the papers tabled  by the Finance Minister, in August 2023, the industry which employed the highest number of foreign workers was that of Administrative and Support Service Activities, with a recorded number of 16,792 individuals.

Just eight months ago, this figure was at 15,977.

The Accommodation and Food Service Activities Industry had the second-highest number of foreign workers, with a total of 15,200 individuals- an increase of about 2,000 international employees from eight months prior.

In August 2023, the Construction Industry employed 10,581 foreign workers, whereas the sector pertaining to the Repairs Of Motor Vehicles And Motorcycles employed 10,366 international employees.

Figures were also quite high with regards the Scientific And Technical Activities industry, the Arts And Entertainment sector, as well as in the area relating to Manufacturing.

Back in 2011, the total number of foreign workers in Malta was 12,338.

From 2011 to 2023, the number of foreign workers increased by 95,068.

Previous figures that there is a higher number of Indian workers in Malta than from any other foreign country, ahead of Italy (11,566) people, the Philippines (9,560), Nepal (8,157), and the United Kingdom (5,144).
