65-Year-Old Man Given 25 Years In Jail In ‘One Of The Worst Cases Of Child Abuse’ In Maltese History
A 65-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after being found guilty of repeatedly raping his nieces since they were three and five years of age. He was sentenced to 25 years in jail by Judge Antonio Mizzi.
It was revealed that the man was given the responsibility of babysitting his nieces on multiple occasions. The man would take the opportunity when he was left alone with his nieces to rape both of them and film the acts.
He had been raping these girls for over a decade – the police only became aware of the abuse when the five-year-old had turned 18, a whole 13 years later.
Investigators found images of the abuse of the man’s computer, and sources have called this case one of the “worst cases of child abuse” to ever happen in Malta.
The court has ordered the man’s name not to be revealed to protect the identity of the victims.
While the maximum penalty for rape is normally nine years, a number of aggravating factors allowed the judge to had down a more sever sentence. These factors included the age of the victims, the fact that the victims were entrusted to the offender, and that it was a continuous offence, among other factors.
He may be eligible for release if he completes his jail sentence.
