9 For 9! Some Of Lovin Malta’s Biggest Achievements Over The Last Nine Years

Today, Lovin Malta turns nine years old. And on this special occasion we’re looking back at nine of our biggest milestones over the years.

It was tough to bring it down to only nine because you’ve all helped us achieve so much in less than a decade, but here goes nothing!

1. The Social Media Awards

On five separate occasions, Lovin Malta celebrated the biggest online movers and shakers this country has to offer, be they TikTok kings and Insta queens to inspirational NGOs and motivational heartbreakers, to award the SMAs.

Through these award ceremonies, Lovin Malta took over everyone’s feeds every single time, always growing our incredible network of the biggest names in the business.

The last time was just last December… but expect something bigger for when Lovin turns 10!

2. Lovin Recommends

Malta and Gozo are full of enticing eateries, respectable restaurants and beloved bars… so where do you begin? Well, that’s where we come in.

Lovin Recommends takes an insane amount of submissions – we’re talking well over 10,000 just this year – and brings them down to the best of the best, awarding them with what’s now become our coveted red sticker.

If you were wondering which ones made the cut for 2024, by the way, check out the full list of eateries.

3. The Lovin Music Awards

In 2019, we hosted the Lovin Music Awards, a no-holds-barred, live awards show celebrating the best artists the islands have to offer.

The LMAs featured a number of live performances… including this 10-minute whirlwind rollercoaster through the best hits of the one, the only, Ira Losco.

4. Award-winning documentaries

From a heartbreaking, in-depth look at the murder of Lassana Cisse to a fly-on-the-wall doc on Roberta Metsola’s historic appointment as the European Parliament’s First Vice, Lovin Malta has published a number of hard-hitting documentaries over the years.

There’s a whole lot to check out, and you can binge-watch them all right here. So that’s your weekend sorted!

5. A historic court case challenging political party media

In early 2021, Lovin Malta filed a historic court case to determine whether propaganda on political party TV stations should be declared unconstitutional.

The court case argues that a law approved by Parliament in 1991 to permit the stations to open went completely contrary to the demands of the Constitution.

By October of that year, the court case had started, and now, nearly three years later, the case is still ongoing (along with a number of parallel cases surrounding both parties), but at one point in February 2023, a major statement by Chief Justice Mark Chetcuti and judges Giannino Caruana Demajo and Anthony Ellul said the constitutional obligation for TV stations to provide “due impartiality” when reporting matters of political controversy also applies to stations owned by political parties.

6. Launching national campaigns through Kaxxaturi

From songs to billboards, the Jon Mallia-led satire show Kaxxaturi was a cultural moment that deserves its own documentary.

Seriously though, through a collaboration with who is now one of Malta’s most popular podcasters, Kaxxaturi pushed for everything from reform at the GU clinicto a complete breakdown of the Vitals-Steward kerfuffle.

And yes, Kaxxaturi led the campaign to stop ministers misusing public funds on Facebook, taking it to the next level by getting thousands of people to sign and donate and hold our leaders accountable.

7. An ever-expanding portfolio of exciting investments and partnerships

Through the years, Lovin Malta has evolved into so much more than one single media house, extending its reaches and offerings to include a number of brands and a group of companies across different industries.

Investments and partnerships in FreeHour MaltaTrusted Tutors and DealToday have dotted our last nine years, and this time last year, Lovin Malta launched MeetInc., a new online platform and hub for local businesses.

8. Exceeding over 650,000 followers across platforms

Last year, Lovin Malta kicked off 2024 in style, hitting 600,000 followers across social media and reaching 4.6 million accounts on Instagram alone in the year’s first 30 days.

By the end of the year, we hit another milestone, reaching and exceeding 650,000 followers after a long celebratory December which also saw us engage more than 34 million Instagram users in the final month of 2024.

Now, with 2025 well underway, the numbers keep racking up, and with them, bigger and better projects keep rolling out. Which brings us to…

9. Launching to the moon in 2025

We kicked off this year by announcing that 72% of Lovin Malta has been acquired by Qamar Ventures.

A monumental step in our journey, this puts Malta’s leading online media platform on a trajectory for even bigger and better things in the near future.

Thank you for sticking with us throughout this wild journey… and if you’re interested in finding out more about our journey, from bold beginnings to moments that inspired change, check out even more milestones from the last nine years and stay tuned for more coming very soon!
