A Maltese youth involved in a fatal hit-and-run that left a cyclist dead last year in Poland has been sentenced to four years in Polish prison and given a lifetime driving ban.

The 18-year-old Maltese youth, referred to as ‘Piero C.’ was found guilty of causing a fatal accident, and driving without a driving license while under the influence of marijuana.

The judgment was given by the Piaseczyn District Court, who found him guilty of causing the fatal accident that occurred on June 3rd last year.

The Maltese youth was 17 years old at the time of the accident. He was driving a Mercedes Benz at around 5pm on Powsińska Street in Bielawa on the outskirts of Warsaw when he lost control of his car, drove into the opposite lane and hit a 77-year-old cyclist.

The cyclist died on the spot.

According to the court, the teenager deliberately violated the principles of road safety, driving at least twice over the 30 kilometre per hour speed limit

He was confirmed to be sober at the scene of the crime, however subsequent tests found that he had marijuana in his bloodstream.

“He was under the influence of a narcotic drug in the form of THC at a concentration of at least 7.76 mg/ml,” a court statement said.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of PLN 30,000 (€6,921) to the wife of the deceased cyclist. The court dismissed him from having to pay court costs.

The teenager’s legal team called the four year sentence “too harsh”, and said the narcotics test was made weeks after the event. They are now planning to appeal the sentence.
