Valletta 2018 only just ended yesterday however Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has already called for discussions for Gozo to become European Capital of Culture the next time Malta takes on the mantle in 2031.

Joseph Muscat spoke about his interest to turn Malta into a cultural magnet and wants to start the ball rolling by injecting tons of attractions and cultural activities in Gozo to make it a strong contender for The European Capital of Culture in 13 years time.

Speaking at a political rally this morning, he said: “Malta is next set to take on the mantle of European Capital of Culture in 13 years time, but we should start planning it from now. There will obviously be an entire process but I think this can be a huge opportunity to place Gozo right at the top of our agenda and bring cultural events and attractions to it. 13 years seems like a long time away, but if we start thinking from now about how to turn Gozo into a cultural magnet, it can become an island that attracts artists from around the world. Just as we managed to turn Valletta around from a moribund town into such a vibrant one, so too can we do the same for Gozo in what could well be one of the most beautiful projects in our history.”

Valletta 2018 officially closed its door yesterday with a ceremony which saw chairman Jason Micallef hand over the title to Matera and Plovdiv 2019.

“During this year, we have seen an unprecedented growth within our country’s culture sector. We have increased funding and investment within it, created new jobs, and provided opportunities to artists and above all, we brought culture closer to the people,” Micallef said.
