A 16-year-old youth has been charged with using a weapon against his family during a heated argument that got out of hand, leading to him aiming a harpoon at a family member and injuring her.

The accused, whose name is not being released under orders of the court, has been remanded in custody after being arraigned in court today.

The argument occurred with the youth’s father, his father’s partner and their four-year-old son. The youth also allegedly kept the family members against their will, and the court heard how he had been threatening to hurt two family members with a harpoon for months.

Legal aid lawyer Fransina Abela said that the argument occurred because the youth wanted to live by himself. She also said that the boy suffers from ADHD, for which he was never treated.

She requested bail for her client, saying that he was employed and noting that his mother had offered him accommodation with her.
