Maltese Contractor Who Caused Death Of Two Women Released From Jail Over Human Rights Breach

A Maltese contractor found guilty of causing the death of two women back in 2004 has been released from jail over an alleged human rights breach.

60-year-old Mary Zarb and 24-year-old Nadya Vavilova died after the apartment block they were in collapsed due to work taking place next door.

Back in November 2022, the contractor Pawlu Demicoli and his employee Kevin Bonnici were sentenced to two years and six months in Malta’s prison after they were found guilty of causing the deaths due to carelessness, a sentence which already seemed too lax.

It has now been reported that the contractor has filed a constitutional case claiming that a human rights breach occurred upon his imprisonment, resulting in his release from jail on a judge’s order.

After the constitutional case was filed, Judge Francesco Depasquale ordered his release from custody against a deposit of €5,000 and a personal guarantee of €50,000.

And this is not the first time their sentences were reduced – Demicoli was initially sentenced to three years back in 2006 but this was reduced to two after an appeal that was finalised in 2022.

Meanwhile, his employee Bonnici who was responsible for excavating the site on the day of the fatal incident had been sentenced to 18 months.

The incident occurred on 3rd June 2004 in Triq Ramon Perellos in St Paul’s Bay, while Vavilova was taking Maltese lessons with Zarb.
