The government has confirmed that it will reveal plans for a new mass public transport system by the end of this year.

This upcoming announcement aligns with the strategic rollout of Malta Vision 2050, aimed at reshaping the country’s economic landscape.
Details about the specific type of transit system being considered remain under wraps.

This follows the suspension of a €6.2 billion underground metro proposal in 2021, which had previously outlined a network of 25 stations across Malta but was later excluded from future budget plans.

In a press briefing earlier today, officials highlighted that the determination of the transit proposal would follow a final consultation phase.

While the government’s policy document on Malta Vision 2050 sidesteps direct mention of the envisioned transport mode, it strongly emphasises the development of sustainable mass transport solutions and the enhancement of data-sharing among authorities to improve traffic management.

The document further outlines the advancement of accessible, citizen-focused services, including efficient mobility and transport infrastructures.

In a recent interview with the Times of Malta Transport Minister Chris Bonett speculated about adopting a rapid bus transit system, which would involve designated lanes for swift travel, resembling the operations of a rail system but with buses. Bonett elaborated that major transit routes would connect to smaller bus services, facilitating access to remote village centers.
He added that without EU financial backing, the government may need to independently finance the new transit system, though no specific budget allocation was mentioned.

Last year, the Opposition Nationalist Party proposed a €2.8 billion trackless tram system spanning six circular lines aimed at integrating industrial and residential areas, predicting a five-year completion timeline.
