Over 2,700 People Denied Maltese Citizenship In Past Five Years
In a parliamentary session this week, Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment Byron Camilleri dropped some surprising figures: over the past five years, a total of 2,752 people had their applications for Maltese citizenship via naturalisation denied.
Out of this number, 756 were dependents, meaning children or family members who applied alongside primary applicants. What’s still a mystery, though, is where these applicants came from or how long they’ve been living in Malta, as the Minister didn’t reveal these details.
The question had been tabled by PN MP Graziella Attard Previ, who was seeking transparency on citizenship refusals. While the numbers give a glimpse into the scale of denied applications, the lack of further context has left many wondering about the stories behind these figures.
This revelation has sparked discussions on the citizenship process in Malta, and whether more clarity and transparency are needed for those hoping to call the island home.
