Roman Pottery Discovered During Trenching Works Along Salini Road As Phase One Completed

Ancient Roman Pottery was recently discovered along an agricultural trench in Triq is-Salini, Naxxar, as phase one of the project has been completed.

The road has been undergoing work for the last month or so, with the second phase of the project to be rolled out soon.

“An agricultural trench was recently discovered at Triq is-Salini, Naxxar when it was truncated along its edge during excavation works for the extension of water services by the Water Services Corporation,” the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage said on Facebook.

“The archaeological monitor on-site immediately identified the find and alerted the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage in line with the ToRs issued for these works.”

While agricultural trenches are frequently encountered during excavation works, they are typically associated with traditional agricultural techniques to provide better anchorage to the roots of cultivated crops.

“What was particular about this agricultural trench was that it contained Roman period pottery vessels which had clearly been carefully placed within this trench.”

The vessels consisted of a large open bowl, within which a cooking pot with a lid, a small plate, and a jug had been placed.

“It is unusual for whole vessels to be placed within an agricultural trench, and the purpose for their placement in this trench is unknown.”

The Superintendence continued to explain that when the road was first formed decades ago, the vessels were compressed and partly fragmented in place, with the original tarmac layer lying directly above these vessels.

“Notwithstanding, the archaeology monitor on-site, with the assistance of officers from the Superintendence, conducted full documentation and excavation of the feature. The artifacts will now be conserved, analysed, and re-constructed where possible.”

Meanwhile, starting Monday 26th June, a single southbound lane, connecting Salini to Naxxar (including telgha’ t’Alla u Ommu), will be open for traffic.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of July, delivering improved water services and enhanced water pressure to our community.
