Malta Is Being Used By Scottish Independence Groups As Inspiration To Successfully Leave The UK

Brexit might be dominating headlines in the UK as Great Britain politically unsticks itself from the rest of Europe, but some Scottish groups are still rallying around the hope of their country leaving the United Kingdom – and they are using Malta to get the point across.
The Facebook page Still Yes has been posting images comparing Malta’s gaining of independence decades ago to Scotland’s still being run by Westminster, England. One image compares the size of the two nations, and features a quote from The Times saying Maltese independence would never work out.
They also featured a comparison of other countries that had gained independence from the UK – including Malta again
This recent campaign is reminiscent of many Maltese people’s frustrated arguments back in 2016, when a defiant Iceland made it to the quarter-finals of the Euro (going so far to beat England in the Round of 16 in the meantime).
The two island nations’ populations (which are nearly identical) had then been brought up to support the classic, “If they can do it, then so can we” by Maltese football fans.
Now, it seems like it’s finally our turn to be as used as an example by another frustrated country.
