Malta Police Union Calls For Attorney General’s Resignation In Light Of HSBC Heist Plea Deal
Tha Malta Police Union is calling for the resignation of Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg following a plea deal made in relation to a bank heist in 2010.
“The Malta Police Union is making reference, without entering into the merits of the case or any other rights a person has to defend himself in a Court of Law together with any request which may be put forward, to the plea-bargaining deal in relation to the HSBC Heist of 2010,” the union said in a new statement.
Saying the union was founded to defend the rights of its members, the MPU said it was “disappointed” by the way the bank heist case had been handled by the AG.
“The Attorney General did not even have the decency to reply to the Judicial Protest filed by the Malta Police Union on the 14th January 2022,” it said. “On the other hand, the AG office found the time to withdraw attempted murder charges which neither the justice system nor the police officers involved, who are the victims in this case, obtained anything.”
“To this regard, and since that no explanation has been received from the office of the Attorney General, the Union is requesting the resignation of same Attorney General for the only reason that she failed to protect the protectors and those who try to keep our country safe.”

On 30th June 2010, a group of robbers attempted a heist on the HSBC headquarters in Qormi while police were busy working on a state visit of Italy’s President.
Police were able to arrive on the scene quickly after receiving an anonymous tip-off. Some 65 shots were fired at police.
The robbers managed to get away. However, Vincent Muscat and Darren ‘It-Topo’ Debono were later charged in connection to the robbery.
The plea deal has already proved controversial, with the Malta Police Union criticising the Attorney General for absolving Debono of the attempted murder of a number of police officers involved in the ensuing gunfight.
Minister Carmelo Abela and former Minister Chris Cardona have been linked to the case, as has Daphne Caruana Galizia murder suspect George Degiorgio.
What do you think of the AG’s approach in this case?
