Malta-Sicily Interconnector Fixed And Operational Ahead Of Schedule
Malta’s electricity interconnector has finally been repaired and has begun operating on the Meditteranean seabed following some final tests.
Repairs were completed on Thursday with subsequent final tests on Friday, including a ‘soak test’ which lasted 12 hours. The results of the test were all positive and the interconnector will once again connect Malta to Siciliy and serve its purpose as a crucial part of Malta’s energy mix.
The Malta-Sicily interconnector was damaged by a ship’s anchor on 23rd December causing several nationwide blackouts.
The repairs cost approximately €11 million and began on February 14th. Despite some inclement weather, the repairs were completed ahead of schedule.
