Maltese Actress Sues It-Torċa For Story Suggesting She Is A Nazi Sympathiser
Maltese actress and Occupy Justice activist Pia Zammit has sued the editor of It-Torċa for libel after the newspaper published a story suggesting she is a Nazi sympathiser on the basis of a photo of her in play.
“To maliciously and intentionally call a private individual a Nazi sympathiser based on a photo of her in play, when ALL evidence is obviously to the contrary, is a step too far,” Zammit said. “Someone has to take a stand against these forms of bullying.”
She also filed a libel case against Sergio Galea Vincenti after he called her a ‘Nazzista’ on his Facebook page.
A photo of Zammit wearing a Nazi costume, that was taken backstage during a 2009 performance of the wartime comedy ‘Allo ‘Allo, recently started circulating around social media channels.
Last week, It-Torċa published the comments of an anonymous educator, who warned it was offensive to victims of the Nazis. Zammit and several actors, as well as Opposition leader Adrian Delia, condemned this report as a form of intimidation and attempted censorship.
The General Workers Union, which owns It-Torċa, has responded to this controversy by urging people to be aware of what they post on social media.
