A Maltese private military contractor and paratrooper has trained 350 Ukrainian school teachers in first aid for children.
“When I saw that civilian centres were being shelled, I called Angelina and proposed stop-the-bleed training, especially for teachers and community leaders. During war, the risk of traumatic injuries is high and the more persons understand the process to stop a catastrophic bleed, the more lives we save,” said Patrick Schaerrer after the sessions, which were organised by the Klitschko Foundation.
The Klitschko Foundation team conducts schoolteacher trainings so that they can save lives in emergency situations. Training sessions were held in Kyiv and Chernihiv oblasts, which were partially occupied last year and now face the risk of massive missile strikes.
Patrick, a former military man and graduate of the Virginia Military Institute in the United States, supervised these courses.

During his last two visits to Ukraine he has run some of them in various schools. He explained in detail to the participants how to provide first aid in case of trauma injuries and accidents, including the appropriate techniques. The course aroused great interest among teachers, as they often face situations in which they need to offer quick and effective assistance to students.
“We are confident that the course, delivered by this Maltese citizen, will significantly increase the level of knowledge and skills of Ukrainian teachers in first aid. It is essential to ensure the students’ safety and to react promptly and effectively to emergency situations,” says Angelina Osadcha, Director of the Klitschko Foundation.

For years now, Ukraine has been heroically repelling the overwhelming force of Russian troops on its territory. Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of people, including children, were killed and entire cities and towns destroyed. Over the past year, amid its large-scale invasion, Russia has begun firing missiles daily at civilian targets such as hospitals, schools, and playgrounds.
Ukrainian civilians, including children, suffer heavy shelling every day. Therefore, it is important for them to be able to adapt to such living conditions and respond to challenges. The smallest but most useful thing one can do is to learn how to perform first aid. These skills are crucial in times of war, when it is impossible to access standard medical care. It can save lives and reduce injuries not only on the battlefield, but also in public places such as schools and offices.
Moreover, first aid skills are highly valuable in everyday life, for example, in case of road accidents or domestic injuries.
