Maltese Thief Who Stole Students’ Cash From University Library Pigeonholes Given A Third Chance

The courts have shown leniency with a young thief who was found guilty of stealing money and other items from the bags of six students which were deposited inside the pigeonholes at the University of Malta library.

The 23-year-old, who Lovin Malta has decided not to name, was prosecuted last month after CCTV cameras caught her rummaging through the bags and making off with the goods on six separate occasions. According to The Times of Malta, she then used the money to buy designer products.

The irony of course is that the university obliges students to leave their bags inside the pigeonholes before studying in the library so as to prevent them stealing library books.

The thief is a repeat offender and indeed was conditionally discharged for three years in November 2016 after pleading guilty to stealing clothes, perfumes and watches from a Sliema outlet.

She pleaded guilty of the library robberies and of breaching the terms of her conditional discharge, but prosecuting inspector Colin Sheldon urged magistrate Charmaine Galea not to jail her, but rather to “teach her a lesson”.

And Galea did just that, conditionally discharging her for a further three years and warning her that she risks serious repercussions if she breaches it again.

“The court believes that the accused, who is still young, can benefit from a probation order and that this could help her get her life back on track,” the ruling, delivered on 11th March, reads. “However, she must understand that this is the second time the court is giving her another chance and it’s up to her if she wants to seize this opportunity. Similar opportunities may not exist if she commits a crime in the future.”

Her lawyers were Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri.
