Watch: River Of Love’s Matthew Grech Summoned To Court For Breaking Conversion Therapy Laws
River of Love musician and self-proclaimed “ex-homosexual” Matthew Grech has announced he has been prosecuted for breaking Malta’s laws on conversion therapy, with the first sitting scheduled for February.
Grech posted a video to Facebook explaining that police summoned him to court over allegations that he had promoted conversion therapy during an appearance on a PMNewsMalta show.
The practice of conversion therapy has been outlawed since 2016, yet Reforms Parliamentary Secretary recently announced that an amendment will be added to strengthen this law to outlaw its promotion.
“During this programme, I shared my testimony as a Christian who emerged from homosexuality,” Grech said.
“I was also responding to the presenters’ questions about my life and sexuality in general. They had the right to ask these questions, about a subject which is of course, quite complicated for the ordinary human being.”
He continued his rant, stating that “it is unthinkable that in Malta, we would arrive at this point.”
Later, referring to himself in his capacity as a proud member of River of Love, he said that “we preach that homosexuality is sin. We preach the word of God.”
Grech then stated his belief that these charges were the result of “political vendetta” against the organisation and himself. Enraged, towards the end of his video, he asked those accusing him: “Who do you think you are that you try to face the army of God, the army of Jesus?
He concluded the video by claiming that despite his shock at having been summoned to court, he was happy to be “persecuted for defending the word of God.”
