‘No Flat No Vote’: Voters Protest MEP Election
Amid the chaos ensuing at the Naxxar voting centre, Lovin Malta managed to catch a glimpse of a couple of protest votes submitted by constituents during the European Parliament election.
“No flat, no vote,” someone wrote across their ballot, rendering the vote invalid yet still sending a message.
“Ieqfu ġibu cheap Labour u nivvota PL,” another wrote in the boxes of the Labour candidates.
Similarly, another voter drew a middle finger across the candidates of both of the main parties.
This comes as the counting of votes continues for Malta’s representative at the European Parliament. So far, Labour has won the election with its candidates getting the most votes overall, but this does not mean that it’s won all the seats.
In fact, rumours are going around that the seats will be split evenly between the PN and the PL – meaning each will send up three representatives to Brussels. But, this has not yet been confirmed.
There have also been whispers about a narrow voting gap between the two major parties with estimates ranging between a 10,000 to 15,000 voting difference which is a stark contrast to the 42,656 recorded in the 2019 EP election.
