‘Misskhom Tistħu’: Renowned Weight Loss Clinic Slammed For Now-Deleted Fat-Shaming Meme

People have taken to social media to call out a renowned weight loss establishment after it shared a meme that many have condemned as fat-shaming.

The meme, shared by Marion Mizzi Wellbeing Beauty and Spa, was part of a growing, online trend showing footage of a random overweight person diving into open water.

The footage is combined with a different clip to make it seem like a tidal wave results from the jump as soon as the person hits the water.

While some reacted to the post with good humour, saying they found it funny and weren’t offended by it, the majority of viewers have not taken kindly to the post and were quick to make their thoughts publicly known.

The video, which was up for around 12 hours, has now been deleted.

“I guess that means that when your job becomes business…. you no longer care for feelings of clients and people who are struggling to lose weight,” one person said.

“If this reflects your work ethic, you shouldn’t be in the business in the first place – what sheer insensitivity and such an insulting attitude!”

“You should be helping people, not posting jokes on Facebook about people who have a different body. Proud that I’ve never come to you and by seeing this I won’t ever use your service! Shame on you!”

“They say they ‘help’ you lose weight. In this case, they help you start taking antidepressants and seeing a psychiatrist.”

Fat-shaming in Malta has become a serious topic that need proper addressing on the island.

In fact, one Maltese chef recently appealed to people to think twice before passing comments on others’ appearances. Chef Daniel Grech called for more empathy when speaking to others when callously talking about someone’s look.

The context is a tricky one, and not one unanimously agreed on, with some able to find a little humour in similar posts.

Lovin Malta has reached out to the organisation and is awaiting a response.
