MUT: ‘We Will Not Work With St Albert The Great College Board And Rector – And They Should Resign’
The Malta Union of Teachers has slammed the decision to fire a veteran headmaster in a protest held this morning in Valletta.
The protest, attended by scores of people, packed out a Valletta side street in front of St Albert the Great College as MUT President Marco Bonnici had strong words for the board and rector.
“We have lost faith in the board and the rector. We have completely lost faith in them, and we will not work with them,” Bonnici said to a cheering crowd.
“They are no longer fit for purpose and must resign.”
The calls for the board’s resignation come after the firing of Mario Mallia, a headmaster of 16 years at the Valletta College. The sacking has proven controversial, with social media becoming flooded with people – from Dean of Faculty of Social Wellbeing Andrew Azzopardi to host Peppi Azzopardi to former students – expressing solidarity with the popular headmaster.
The college itself has issued a statement saying the firing comes after years of unresolved managerial issues.
In Valletta today, the union asked what message this sacking would be sending students of the college.
“What message is this sending our children? Why are we turning the clock back hundreds of years? We will be holding the board and rector responsible for any damage done to students.”
The MUT ending by saying they will continue to push for justice on this issue, and will be in contact with staff from the college to show support.
“We will continue giving full support to Mallia, the the staff of the school, as we have been doing over the last few days until we see justice served with everyone – and children’s interests placed first.”
What do you make of the firing of Mallia?
