Hugo Chetcuti has succumbed to injuries he sustained after he was stabbed in the stomach in Paceville last Friday.

The entertainment mogul was stabbed twice outside one of his establishments last weekend and, while his condition was originally believed to have stabilised, the perforation of his stomach had led to an infection.

Chetcuti started his entertainment career in the 1980s with his acquisition of the popular Footlose nightclub, and has since founded some of the most well-known establishments in Paceville – including Havana, Hugo’s Lounge, Hugo’s Terrace, Soho Lounge, Shadow Lounge, Native Bar & Diner and Hugo’s Hotel.

In recent years, he branched out extensively in the culinary industry – including Moroccan food at Hugo’s Middle East, Asian food at Bacco Sticks & Sum and gourmet burgers at Hugo’s Burger.

Chetcuti was standing outside his latest venture, Hugo’s Seafood & Cocktails, when a man covering his face with a cap approached him, hugged him and stabbed him twice in the stomach last week.

Serbian national Bojan Cmelik, a former employee of Chetcuti, was arrested following a police chase throughout Sliema that same night and charged with the businessman’s attempted murder. He is pleading not guilty and is being kept in police custody.

The police are now investigating whether Cmelik, who doesn’t have a registered address in Malta, was a hired hand.
