Daphne Caruana Galizia’s Sons Leave Heartwarming Message To Castille Protestors
Matthew, Andrew and Paul Caruana Galizia – the three sons of assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia donated pizzas to a group of people who turned up for tonight’s protest at Castille tonight.
Each pizza had a bay leaf in the middle of them, plucked from Daphne Caruana Galizia’s garden, and the delivery came with a message from her sons which was read out to the crowd.
“Bay leaves are a symbol of strength and courage,” the Caruana Galizias wrote. “These are from our mother’s garden. With our support and gratitude.”
In fact, Daphne Caruana Galizia had planted bay leaves in her garden for a symbolic reason – the word ‘Daphne’ comes from the Greek word for ‘bay leaf’.
At tonight’s protest, some 100 women set up tents in Castille Square to pressure the Prime Minsiter to sack police commissioner Laurence Cutajar and Attorney General Peter Grech. They laid out a poster of the police commissioner’s face on the steps to Castille, and placed a picture of onions on it to symbolise his incompetence.
At tonight’s protest, human rights activist Maria Pisani said the protestors were demanding justice for the slain journalist. In a statement, the protestors said they were “concerned for our future and that of our children. This is not the Malta we recognise, not the Malta we want to leave to them.”
They continued by saying that “our statement today is not just to place demands on our political class. Our statement is a call to the people. For too long our nation has been shackled a culture of impunity, nepotism, and the normalisation of abuse of power. It is time to hold our Government, our political parties and our parliament to account.”
The protest camp will last all weekend, until Sunday at 11pm.
