Ian Borg Says Risk Of Pollution From Chemical Tanker Adrift Off Coast ‘Extremely Low’
Transport Minister Ian Borg has said he is assured that the risk of pollution from a chemical tanker that has drifted dangerously close to Malta’s shores is “extremely low”.
“Transport Malta informed me that it is assisting the Chem P tanker, 209 metres long, that is at risk of capsiszing off the Maltese coast,” Borg said.
“I’ve been informed that the ship had trouble maintaining its original position outside our territory because of bad weather, and I’ve been assured that the pollution risk is extremely low.”
“I thank all the workers who are working in this storm.”
The vessel reportedly departed from Algeciras, Spain on 18th March, and was headed to Marsaxlokk.
Onlookers captured the vessel drifting inwards towards Maltese shores, losing a battle against powerful gale-force winds which have rendered the ship as “not under command.”
